The lecture series 'studium generale' has been an integral part of the University's lecture offerings since the academic year 2007/2008. This series has the title 'Administration, Politics and Economy in Dialogue'. The series is aimed at students as well as interested persons from the general public. Guest speakers of high renown are invited to speak on current topics from these areas. Lecturers have included not only Heribert Rech, Minister of the Interior for the State of Baden Württemberg, but also the Chariman of the University Council, Stefan Gläser, a former mayor and managing director of the Association of Cities in Baden-Württemberg, and Hans Nußbaum, a businessman with world-wide experience.

The studium generale is an opportunity, independent of the regular lessons and seminars, to discuss interesting and current topics and serves as a platform for continuing education and information.

The studium generale is part of Module 15 for students in the University's bachelor's program.

Forum 'Zukunftsfragen' - Questions about the future

The FORUM ZUKUNFTSFRAGEN is a project of the Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) program at Kehl University.

Founded in 1994, the FORUM has reached about 10,000 participants over the last 17 years. It has been designated as an official ESD Decade Project by UNESCO. Its educational objective is to raise awareness among the participants for the issues of sustainable development. Students and external participants should keep in mind aspects of sustainable development when making concrete decisions on and off the job.

The range of topics includes ecological, economic, socio-cultural and spiritual questions. In addition, it invites participants to discuss questions of democratic participation on all levels. The focus here is on basic knowledge as well as concrete suggestions, e.g. regarding 'green' business practices or the integration of foreigners.

The FORUM ZUKUNFTSFRAGEN consists of the following elements:

  • a lecture series at the University, open to the public, with 30 lectures a year under the heading „Forming the Future“, which is regularly attended by citizens of the Ortenau region/Strasbourg
  • seminars on sustainable development, e.g. Local Agenda 21 or moral courage
  • the Future Prize, which is awarded each year for an excellent bachelor’s thesis on a topic relating to sustainable development

In cooperation with the Office for Ethics in Science and Technology at Karlsruhe University and with the Ethics Network of the Universities of Applied Science in the State of Baden-Württemberg, there is the possibility of earning a certificate of competence in ethics.

The FORUM ZUKUNFTSFRAGEN has now been selected for the third time as the official German Decade Project for the period 2011/2012 by the jury of the National Committee of the UN Decade Opens external link in new window'Education for Sustainable Development'.
